UltrasonicScapes

Director・Camera・Sound・Edit/ Eisuke Yanagisawa
Production Year/ 2008
Duration/ 8 minutes

Buzzing of cicadas, repeated beats from automatic gate, bustle of the city,
pulses of bats, drone sounds from street lights… I can hear the sounds as
city roaring, raising an alarm against human-beings. This is an another soundscape
documentary beyond our audible range. All sounds were recorded simultaneously
with pictures using bat detector which turns ultrasonic sounds into audible sounds.

KyotoScapes

Director/ Eisuke Yanagisawa

Camera/ Eisuke Yanagisawa and Simone Tarsitani
Sound and Edit/ Eisuke Yanagisawa
Production Year/ 2007
Duration/ 4 minutes

"KyotoScapes" aims to explore the acoustic environment in Kyoto. We are surrounded by various sounds in our daily lives, but most of them are out of our consciousness. Thus I focused on "sounds" rather
than "picture" in the process of making this film. This means to reverse the conventional way in film making and focus the relations between sounds and picture. In this short film field recording was conducted
with real-head binaural microphone and hydrophone.

Pơ thi

Director・Camera・Sound/ Eisuke Yanagisawa and Vincenzo Della Ratta
Edit/ Eisuke Yanagisawa
Production Year/ 2014
Duration/ 20, 34, 47 minutes

“Pơ thi” is the biggest of the death rituals and ceremonies of the Jarai ethnic group.
They believe that when someone dies, his or her Spirit is not able to rejoin the ancestors.
Only after “Pơ thi” has been celebrated, the Spirit will be able to reach its final destination
in the “Village of the Spirits”. Shot in the Central Highlands of Vietnam, this movie summarizes
the most significant moments of the “Pơ thi” ritual, from its preparation till the end of the celebration.
Parades of disguised figures, animal sacrifices, gong music and dances are performed by the living to please the Spirits of the dead, and to release them from all earthly bonds. Apart from allowing viewers to witness a fascinating traditional ritual, this movie shows us how such traditions continue to exist in the context of modern Vietnam.

Each ethnic minority living in the Central Highlands of Vietnam has their own “Gong Culture”. Since old times, many family stock gong sets and play gongs at various rituals and ceremonies. But their gong culture is now declining due to the modernization and aging of gong players etc…
